Jonah Goldberg, a well known “conservative” on National Review and Fox, is out with a book claiming that liberal western democracy is under assault by the forces of tribalism, nationalism and populism. He is blaming forces on the far-left and right. I think he totally misses the point. Conservatism is essentially liberal, a term the far-left has coopted. I would argue that it is largely under assault by leftism, socialism and big-government statism. The problem is that with great advances has come the rise of secularism and an erosion of morality. These things are intrinsically part of leftism. There is no longer a sense of right and wrong, there is a rise of moral relativism, and a feeling that people can “do what ever they want”. When things don’t work out there is a backlash against the system and opposing groups.
